Our daily objects contain much more complexity than we would think. In this module, we studied the form of objects which had a specific mechanism. Understanding its shape and form and finding out why it is shaped the way it is. Also studying the various external forces acting on the object and also its respective reaction. For my study, I choose a multi tool pocket knife that holds a variety of tools inside a pocket form.
The module focused on exploring day-to-day objects not just as material objects but through their geometry, volume, mechanics, and forces within the form.
Analyzing it as a set of forces, as a set of components, and as a set of movements.
Form is an extension of content.
Form through its geometry
From as a set-of components and their movement.
Imagining form as a set of planes, lines, and points. , understanding its mechanism and the forces experienced by it.
The studio helped me look at these objects closely as I began sketching them out in detail. I opened the system physically and in my drawings, to understand the smaller parts and their function. I identified the forces of compression and tension and how they make the object function.
The larger idea was to develop an approach of looking closely at these objects every day and deciphering how they work and what makes them so. It made me question the form in several instants and what makes the objects the way they are.
